DIY deck maintenance tips

Decking

The great Australian deck is something that allows us to capitalise on the warm climate we enjoy here in Sydney. It’s a place for both adults and kids alike to hang out and make the very most of outdoor living.

However, while a professionally built deck will provide you with years of service, it is essential that you maintain it throughout its life. Fortunately, deck maintenance is something you can carry out yourself. Just follow this simple deck maintenance schedule:

Clean

A dirty deck is a haven for mould and mildew, which is why you need to give yours a proper deep clean on a yearly or bi-yearly basis. Start by removing any debris between the deck boards. You can use a putty knife or a powerful garden hose with a nozzle. Then good the entire deck a thorough sweep to remove any loose debris before washing it with your cleaner of choice (this all depends on whether your deck is wooden, composite or vinyl).

Seal

Once your deck is clean and dry, it’s time to seal it. Before you even start sealing, cover nearby plants and other items to protect them from the sealant.

First, lightly sand the deck so that you have a nice, clean surface on which to apply the sealant. It’s also worth replacing any loose nails or screws at this time too. Next use a brush or roller to apply the sealant remembering that two thin coats is better than one thick one.

Inspect & repair

Throughout the year, give your deck a visual inspection to identify any potential issues. Oftentimes, small issues can be fixed without significant investment and will prevent bigger bills further down the line.

Check the boards of the deck for rot, the ledger for signs of structural damage and all the other joists, posts and beams for signs of degradation.

Preventative maintenance

It’s a good idea to keep trees and bushes that are located near your deck neatly trimmed. This reduces the chances of mould, moss and rot occurring. It’s also wise to move any planters around so the area underneath them doesn’t become discoloured over time. Giving your deck a proper sweep on a regular basis will also increase its longevity.
